In case you haven’t heard, Fiat stands for ‘fabbrica Italiana automobili Torino’ – an Italian automobile made in Torino (Turin). Fiat also means ‘let there be’ in Latin.
The very first Fiat rolled out of the original Torino factory in 1901. It had a 3hp Boxer engine and was able to travel at 35km/h – breakneck speed in those days. Ten years later Tipo Zero, the first mass-produced Fiat, drove off the production line. It was distinctly stylish, setting a racier tone for the many models to come.
Today’s Fiats reflect everything the world loves about Italian motor vehicles. They are quick, precisely engineered and eye-catchingly stylish. Top Gear’s site captures the marque concisely: “Fiat seems to have cornered the market in cheap chic, mixing good value with wacky design to lasting effect.”
